Linkr the Google Gadget

Well, I've successfully created release version 1 of my very own Google Gadget, Linkr! (sorry, it's the "cool" thing to do to drop off the "e"). This gadget came into existence because I was tired of always having to create a rough html file just to make a link to download something - for those of you who've had to do it, you know it's a pain. With Linkr, all you have to do is paste (or type) the link you want created into the box, click "Go," and just underneath your link will appear. Then you can easily right-click and save the file to your computer.

Steps to add this gadget to your iGoogle page (if you don't have one, you'll need to create one to use this):

  • Right-click on this Linkr link and choose Copy Shortcut/Copy Link Location.
  • On your iGoogle page, find and click the "Add Stuff>>" link (mine's on the right side of the page near the top).
  • To the right of the search button, click the "Add by URL" link.
  • In the window that pops up, delete everything in the text box, right-click and select "Paste" to insert the Linkr link.
  • Click the "Add" button.
  • Google will pop up a warning message saying that Google didn't create the gadget, is that okay - answer yes, because I'm not near good enough to even come up with a way to do something malicious to your computer...
  • It should be on your page now!
Now, I know some of you are thinking, "Okay, Jared, what's the purpose?" Like I said, I made it so I can quickly download files that either my browser automatically opens or that I have the link from out of a page's source code.

This goes excellent with the tutorial I just saw on how to download music from Haystack.

Version 1, Features:
  • Gadget keeps the last three links you've used
  • Clear button will completely reload the gadget, clearing out old info
  • No information is stored in the gadget - links are detected and displayed through Javascript.
Version 1, Known Issues:
  • After typing in the text field, pressing "Enter" will cause the module/page to reload.
Please, let me know of any issues, features, suggestions, etc, you have - I enjoyed making this!
